Scholarship & Achievement A panel of qualified educators evaluates the transcripts of grades and scholastic test scores to determine the scholastic score. The judging panel evaluates the achievements of each candidate in their school and community to determine the achievement score. The scores are added to equal 20% of the contestent's overall score and to determine the Scholarship and Achievement award recipient. Interview In a 10-minute discussion session with each OYW candidate, the panel of judges evaluates knowledge, perception, clarity of expression, sense of values, and communication skills. Performing Arts Each candidate is permitted up to two minutes to display a talent of their choice. The total performance is evaluated for ability and skill in light of the difficulty as well as stage presence. Talents can range from poetry and dramatic presentations, all types of singing and dancing, to karate, twirling, piano and instrumental. Aerobics & Fitness Physical well-being and stamina, as well as coordination and agility, are evaluated during a group aerobic exercise routine featuring calisthenics. Presence & Presentation Naturalness in carriage, posture, and poise in moving about the stage are considered, along with the ability to verbally communicate with confidence during the on-stage question segment. |

The Bradford-Sullivan Counties' Outstanding Young Woman Program recognizes outstanding high school senior girls. $6,300. in scholarships was awarded at the 2002 program. Finalists are selected in the spring of their junior year at a preliminary evaluation, then invited to attend summer activities to get acquainted. Rehearsals begin in September on Sunday afternoons with the program concluding on October 5th. |

The Bradford-Sullivan Counties' OYW, Inc. is a non-profit organization manned by many volunteers in addition to those above. Scholarship money is raised by the local organization through patron, sponsor and donor scholarship contributions, program book advertising, and ticket sales. All donations are tax-deductible under section 501(c)3 of the IRS Code. Volunteers are always welcome to get involved. Through the OYW program, the contestants gain valuable interview and public speaking skills, self-confidence and self-awareness. |
Who is eligible? Young women who are currently in the eleventh grade, are U.S. citizens, and attend high school, are home schooled or reside in a school district within Bradford and Sullivan Counties are eligible to participate. |

Pennsylvania OYW awarded cash scholarships of $10,000. at the 2002 state program. College Scholarships are also available to finalists and award winners. 2002 colleges participating are: Albright, Alvernia, Arcadia, Cedar Crest, Lebanon Valley, Point Park, Misericordia, St. Elizabeth, Hood, Rosemont, Seton Hill and Waynesburg. |
